Victorian Community History Awards 2009
18-05-2009

Collingwood Historical Society a winner two years in a row.

The winners of the Victorian Community History Awards were announced in a ceremony in Queen's Hall, Parliament House, on Saturday 16 May.

Bitter roots, sweet fruit won the award for best Community Research Registers and Records. The judges said "Karen Cummings has written a very fine book ... here is an absorbing look at Collingwood trying out one educational experience after another ... broad in scope and rich in the detail of solid research - how rich is indicated by the huge number of its end notes."

Janet Taylor, Anne Holmes and Karen Cummings attended the ceremony. The anticipatory tension was almost unbearable. The introductory remarks emphasised the particularly high quality of this year's entries and Karen immediately gave up her hope of getting a "Commended". Our category was one of the last to be announced. The shortlisted entries were read out, the finalists stood to the side of the stage, and then at last the unbelievable words were heard: "Winner Bitter roots, sweet fruit."
